Page 2 Page 3 Page 4. Comprising a microprocessor based controller and a motorised filter module, it can fine tune the contrast of variable contrast paper to within 0. The filter module has two filters, yellow and magenta, and exposures are made through each filter in turn.
The ratio of the two exposures controls the resulting contrast of the paper. The system is currently available customised for several popular enlargerswith more to come. For existing users, the latest firmware is available for download here. Heiland has recently introduced a range of LED cold light sources which interface directly to the Splitgrade system and which can be adapted to many different enlargers from the Leitz V35 through 6x9, 5x4, 7x5 to 10x8.
The "Comfort" control interface adds a new level of convenience to the operation of the system and can be added to existing controllers as an option.
For convenience, we have summarised the differences between this system and our Exposure Meters here. Several influences characterise a black and white photograph. Before taking a shot of the subject the photographer recognises the subject contrast and determines the exposure and development of the film in order to reproduce the subject.
The resulting negative will have a contrast range ideally in the region of 1.
To make a print from each negative the contrast range of the paper should be chosen to match that of the negative, and variable contrast paper offers an ideal solution to this. If you are working with a conventional grade control system there are a number of factors to consider:.
All these problems have led to the development of the Splitgrade system. Read the user manual K pdf. The result is a fine print retaining all the detail in the negative. How to Change filters on a Thomas Safelight
At any time, you may change the exposure and grade settings manually to fine tune the result, or to cater for high or low key subjects. Learn More The Splitgrade Philosophy Several influences characterise a black and white photograph. If you are working with a conventional grade control system there are a number of factors to consider: Sets of contrast filters allow steps of only half a grade, and they are also not optimised for the variety of light sources that are used in enlargers.
Also, the actual contrast produced by any given filter will be dependent on the characteristics of the paper in use. When using infinite grade systems colour or VC heads the major disadvantage is that the range of possible grades is not linear.

In other words, a given adjustment may result in a different change in paper contrast depending on the starting point. Most systems have no accurate exposure compensation when changing grade. The "consistent exposure across grades 00 to 3. The photographer has to work out for himself the optimum settings for his combination of film, enlarger and paper.
Read the user manual K pdf Splitgrade simplifies the steps to make a print All you have to do is Load the negative into the enlarger, select the film and paper type, compose and focus the image.
After focussing, select the lens aperture you wish to use. Using the light-sensing probe, explore the baseboard image ensuring that the lightest and darkest parts are measured. The controller can now calculate the best contrast grade and exposure time for this particular negative. Postion the paper in the easel and press the "Print" button.Remember Me? I was looking to update my enlarger light source and this looks very nice but I'm a little confused by what other extra things you are required to use it. It is LED light with a narrow spectral red, has a dimmer and it can switched to white.

The light sources are not anymore expensive as the older stuff was 20 years back. I have been fortunate to find the older technology both "hot" and "cold"one is basically a light bulb similar to a slide projector, the "cold light" is something like a fluorescent tube which by the way these cold lights require a heater to work properly The modern LED sources put everything else in second place still perfectly usable 2nd place.

And from the reputation of Heiland something that will last and work for years to come. My humble opinion, I get by with some very nice older equipment, but I am sure one day I will be getting one or more of these light sources. Best Regards Mike. I dig it. Won't ever go back. I got the LED light source and the splitgrade controller. It includes an analyser and starts you off with a base exposure and contrast which you can easily adjust manually.
The system is highly customizable and has lots of great features. I got their safelights too. All good stuff. Originally Posted by Payral. Originally Posted by Duolab I have two Zone VI type 2 enlargers, one is the 8x10 conversation, the other 5x7.

Heiland Splitgrade LED Module for Leica Focomat V35 AF Long ago people used the darkroom, not because they liked the idea, but because it was the only cost-effective way to have their negatives printed on a decent size of paper.
You were photographer, not a darkroom expert and with the exception of a handful of fine-art printers and zone-system enthusiasts, the darkroom was a place to be avoided. There has always been a core of photographers who wanted to have mastery over every step of the photographic process. Since the full digitization of photography from capture to distribution, every one can be a master of the photographic universe. From a technical standpoint a fine darkroom print and a fine inkjet print may be equals, and when large-sized prints are required say significantly larger than A4 the digital workflow wins hands-down because of the degradation effect of light scattering in the silver-halide emulsion.
From a qualitative and may I add an emotional view the silver-halide print has a visual impact that the digital print simply lacks. It is not by accident that Nik with Silver Efex and DxO with Filmpack have two programs that emulate the quality of the subtle shades of grey at least much more than fifty!
Darkroom prints from standard 35 mm Leica negatives are limited to a size of A4 and at most A3 to have strong visual impact and high technical quality excellent sharpness impression also known as acutance and a just perceptible grain pattern for three-dimensional reproduction of fine textural detail.
One of the main rules for Leica pictures is the optimization of the negative area, not wasting the edges of the image. The proportion of the negative however is difficult to match with theand proportion of many printing papers.
Below: an overall view of the Splitgrade system for V35 The creation of a good print with maximum black and silvery highlights the area where inkjet prints still confront their Waterloo is not easy given the considerable influence of a number of variables.
Ansel Adams wrote a thick book that only explained the basics!

Finding the exact exposure time to get maximum black without clogging the shadows, and selecting the correct paper gradation for a given negative density range was and is a time consuming experience and one that has to be repeated for every size of enlargement and paper choice. Most papers used in the darkroom are of the variable contrast type. VC paper is composed of two different emulsion types in one layer, one sensitive to green light soft gradation and one sensitive to blue light hard gradation.
With a yellow and a magenta filter or a mix of both we expose one or both emulsion types for a certain time. The yellow filter blocks out the blue light and so exposes the green sensitive layer. The magenta filter blocks out the green light and so the blue sensitive layer is activated. All VC modules use a light box to mix the blue and green colors for one exposure.
